Homework

The boys and girls are now at the senior end of the school. We will be encouraging the children to be independent learners and to take responsibility for their own learning.
This year homework will consist of reading (English and Irish), tables and spelling. The children will also be asked to work on projects and writing tasks that will have a longer deadline. The purpose of the latter is to help the children to develop time management and planning skills in relation to homework assignments. With this in mind, the following suggestions may be helpful.

  • Have a quiet spot, free from interruptions, where the child can concentrate.
  • Discuss with your child what is the best time to do their homework. They need to be part of the decision-making.
  • Some children neglect homework that is not written. Emphasise the importance of ‘learning’ homework, research etc.
  • If your child does not understand their homework please encourage them to ask teacher the following morning.
  • Homework should not take more than 30-40 minutes.
  • If homework is regularly taking longer than this, it should be brought to the teacher’s attention.
