Reading

It is essential that the children read regularly outside of school. Reading develops vocabulary and is a vital skill for educational success. The key to developing the reading habit is to mirror it. We need to create space in every day where reading can flourish. In school we have time most days for sustained, silent reading. We also occasionally have D.E.A.R. times, which stands for Drop Everything and Read. It would be very beneficial if the children could have some quiet, device-free time at home when they can enjoy reading. Some children do not enjoy reading as much as others, but every child can enjoy books at their own level. Here are some suggestions.
1. Take time and use trial and error to find the books your child likes. These could be sports biographies or novels. The important thing is to find what you enjoy.
2. The local library is an invaluable, often underrated, resource when it comes to encouraging children to read and it is free. They will be only too happy to make recommendations.
3. If your child has a reading difficulty he/she might enjoy audio books or better still listen and read simultaneously. Many children’s books are availaable as audio books.
4. Paired reading is always nice. Take turns reading chapters. This gives you a chance to discuss the book amd check comprehension.
5. Maybe they could read for a younger sibling. Anything that encourages the habit is worth exploring.
6. Have a family reading time. If everyone is reading they are more likely to join in. Turn off all devices!
7. Make it something to look forward too rather than a ‘chore’. Hot chocolate to go with a good book is sure to entice even the most reluctant readers.

  1. I think reading is pretty important and since these days lots of people are on devices they should go and pick up a book. My favorite book series is Dork Diaries because it is interesting and relatable. What book do you like? Visit my blog-http://chloe56ma.edublogs.org
